Teen Gothic

I'm really grateful for this subreddit.

I've always been dark alternative, come from a metal background, and been discovering goth music for about a year now. This subreddit is my base of operations; I've discovered all the goth music I like on here so far. I'm really picky about music in general, so it's a bit slow-going, but my playlist has 102 songs across several albums from a good few artists now, so I'm not complaining too much.

Thank you, to the people who keep posting songs, and the people who keep this place real and safe.

Can anyone else relate?

I know a lot of people complain about whatever issues with what’s called “tradgoth.” It’s been circling online for the past couple years and I’m glad so. I’m honestly surprised it didn’t die after a week. I know that there’s a bit to complain about but there is a lot to be glad for. It might not be traditional goth which started in the late 70’s and early 80’s but the fact younger people on on social media haven’t let it die in a week and understand the politics and music proves that eveything is alright.

I love Fields of The Nephilim so much. Even though they are only one of my favorite bands, there is no band considered goth or anything else that can ever scratch the precise itch that Neph does for me. Not even the Sisters of Mercy (who I truly LOVE) can compare with FOTN in terms of similarity, though Neph is occasionally labeled as a Sisters clone, which I genuinely don’t understand. It’s as if people see hats and hear “goth” and think “OMG just another copy”. Anyways, back to the music itself: FOTN have a timeless, evil yet Angelic, heavy yet ethereal vibe that frankly causes my disbelief that human beings sat in a studio and recorded that fantastic shit. What do you MEAN an ancient and immortal god wasn’t resurrected from the core of the earth to call upon his minions!? They sound so 1980s yet an angry medieval dragon could bellow out in a mighty voice the words that Carl McCoy such does.

I love Fields of the Nephilim so much. Their music is like magic to me; it's basically mysticism in misical form. When I listen to them, I feel something very ancient being awakened; Still, their music seems timeless to me.

I don’t know where to start but I honestly love the cure and what their music does to me. I feel like the cure’s songs are made to hit you and resonate with you on a personal level the lyrics in songs such as cold and disintegration are so heart wrenching the way Robert uses his vocals in different ways is genius and honestly I truly think they purposely wrote there songs the way they did to make you feel like they were made personally for you as the songs become so relatable as you dive deep into the lyrics.

Tracks like Mouse, Double Negative and Eternal Love deserve people's attention I think. It's more musically advanced than lots of other goth and darkwave music I hear. They use lots of borrowed chords like The Frozen Autumn. So their chord progressions have a myriad of dark counterpoint curveballs. The stuff that catches you by surprise in a good way. They have fun with time too. Tracks like New Violet alternate between 6/4 and 4/4 time. Tracks like Mouse are in 4/4 but use odd numbers when repeating bars. Still remains dance-able regardless. Yet never firmly sounding in the club at any point. So it doesn't feel out of place listening to it at home. Perfect for overcast days.

It hits me in a way and I have seen it do the same to other people I've shown this LP to. This was the release that had their sound clicking for me and put them on my map. Highly recommended!

Me and my wife went to a thrift store today and I geeked out cause I saw reptile house on vinyl. I immediately picked it up to buy it. I showed it to her which she thought was super cool and crazy at what the price was for it. As we continue on we were looking at pins and she found a Bauhaus Pin which she immediately gave to me. Which meant a lot cause we both love Bauhaus and she could’ve gotten it for herself but instead she gave it to me. After checking everything out and getting ready to buy our stuff she takes my record and pin out of my hands and proceeds to buy it for me as a gift. Which made it very heartfelt and meaningful for me. I love her very much and she’s the reason why I know/love so many of these amazing goth bands that mean so much to me now. I just wanted to show everyone what we found and just make an appreciation post for her. I hope everyone else is having an amazing day.
